Making A Splash: Ahead of Bucks Open Studios, Steve Urwin talks art with Total MK

Steve Urwin's art is a familiar sight in Newport Pagnell, and his splendid Swan image 'A Bigger Splash' - previously reported on TotalMK - is one of our favourites.

Steve is one of the classy creatives showing out under the Bucks Open Studios banner this month.

He told us what makes him tick creatively...

What are the mediums you work in?

I work mainly with acrylic paints, inks and sprays with tons of texture.Usually on canvas, occasionally on board.

Also create hand drawn digital art prints

What fuels your creativity?

Anything and everything that catches my eyes and heart.  It can be a micro second of seeing a sunset or reading a descriptive passage from a book..I relate to being a child absorbing everything in my environment.

My imaginative flow doesn't need to work hard for something to happen!

The piece of work you have produced that you are most proud of, and why?

A Bigger Splash was a 4ft x 2ft swan painting.

It was the first time for me working on that size canvas..It all flowed so well together with great texture and the impact of a Swan landing on water...So much so I call it my signature piece,it is printed on all my biz cards and banner too.

Did you choose art, or did art choose you?

I used to paint as a child but that didn't last long.  Music was a huge part of my life for a long time, playing in bands etc.
I was subject to some illness in 2002, starting to paint again became a part of my recovery,it still excites me deeply.. I love it!

If you could invite three artists, living or dead, to create a masterpiece with, who would you choose and why?

Van Gogh because he has always been a hero for me,His expression is ever strong in my mind and heart.

His unique ability to paint himself in such colour is still so striking.

Picasso.  He was a technically exceptional artist before he shocked the world and created so much variety..

He never stood still or stayed in the safety of the last painting..

David Hockney. He is bold and ahead of the herd in so many ways.He has the ability to use colour without adhering to the format in place.

Tell us about your creative ambitions?

To create art that proves to be irresistible to the heart and has the capability to stay fresh, and to have the ability to draw interest from across the room it is exhibited in.
