REVIEW: HAIL, CAESAR! IS A 'TRUE LOVE LETTER TO THE GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD'

Hail, Caesar! (2016)

Directors: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen.

Synopsis

Hollywood "fixer" Eddie Mannix (Brolin) is called in to action when the lead of the upcoming epic film Hail, Caesar, Baird Whitlock (Clooney) is mysteriously kidnapped by a group of people calling themselves 'The Future'. But that is only a small subplot to Mannix's problems.

Review, by Claire Durrant

In this latest comedy from the brothers Coen (Joel and Ethan), we concentrate on a Hollywood man who has an abundance of issues to tackle. And believe me here, there is a lot going on in this film!

In true Coen style, the narrative is loose in structure; what we are given is a true love letter to the Golden Age of Hollywood.

But don't let this put you off seeing the film; the fun of watching Brolin's character travel from one studio set to the next is that we get to see beautiful pastiches of the films and the studios of the fifties.

There are some enjoyable turns here. Channing Tatum has one of the best (albeit brief) performances,  overly dramatic, he evoked some of the humour the film has to offer. Tatum has proven to be one of those actors who are just about up for anything.

But for me, Alden Ehrenreich gets the golden star for best performance; he is simply adorable! As a Western film star trying to branch out into more diverse roles, it is amusing to see his transformation unfold. As an actorly director, Ralph Fiennes' tolerance drops and this is wonderfully juxtaposed with Ehrenreich's innocence.
