FILM REVIEW: EX MACHINA AT CINEWORLD MK

2 STARS 2 copy

Fair/passes the time

Synopsis

A young programmer (Domhnall Gleeson) is selected to participate in a breakthrough experiment in artificial intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a breathtaking female A.I. (Alicia Vikander). But all is not as it seems as the A.I. developer (Oscar Isaac) has a hidden agenda.

Review

Saved by a trio of exceptional and intelligent performances, writer Alex Garland (28 Days Later, The Beach) dips his toe into rather tepid sci-fi waters as a first time director.

Logically and scientifically constructed, it is a distant, cold android romance, with some persuasive writing as one would expect from Garland, but wrapped up too much in the dull and turgid interviews  that are the mouth-piece for this supposedly smart alec flick. Ultimately they lead the viewer nowhere.

Isaac impresses the most in yet another socially awkward male catalyst role, the rude, critical buddy you and your friends go for a beer with every now and then but can't quite figure out why.
