IN REVIEW: Wonder Woman - is it wonder-ful or rather dull? Total MK checked in and found out

Wonder Woman (2017). Rated: 12a

Synopsis

Diana (Gal Gadot) is a Princess in her native land, a mythical island hidden from the view of man by the Greek God Zeus and populated only by fearless, warrior women. Diana leaves to help mankind when a pilot (Chris Pine) crash-lands and tells her about a ‘war to end all wars’ raging in the world outside. Despite the misgivings of her mother Hippolyte (Connie Nielsen), Diana and Steve set off to find a crazed General (Danny Huston) whom Diana believes is the incarnation of the God Ares. She can only succeed in her mission if she destroys him.
Review, by Jason Day

Given the perilous state the world is currently in and how the plethora of male comic book characters on the big screen have so far done little to further the cause of world peace, it's long overdue that the most famous female superhero of the printed page should have a go and sort matters out.

Played with wide-eyed, innocent, bluntly questioning delight by that strapping Israeli Gal Gadot, its a wonder that DC Comics hadn't given her a cinematic sponge down years before.

Gadot's characterisation benefits from a script that lets her take complete command of not only the political situation around here (military clowns who dilly-dally at the edges of WWI carnage) but also her own sexual awakening as she comically skewers macho pilot Chris Pine's physical endowments and method of telling the time in a brief but delightfully funny scene.

If ever the world needed a reliable, tough heroine, it is now.
