Director: Louis Leterrier.

2stars - Fair/ passes the time

Synopsis

Sebastian is a top spy (Mark Strong) with a difficult mission to crack, to take out an assassin who is attempting to kill a scientist (Penelope Cruz) who has invented a vaccine that can cure the world of illness and infirmity. His work is made all the more difficult when his long-lost brother Nobby (Sacha Baron-Cohen), now a loutish football loving, booze-swilling man with many children who remained in their home town of Grimsby when Sebastian was adopted by a London family years before.

Despite being vastly different, they must team up to stop the people who want to bring harm to the poor people of the world and being double-crossed all over the world.

Review

Well, the latest Sacha Baron-Cohen comedy annihilation was never going to be a subtle, multi-layered product of emotional insight and delicacy, following The DictatorBruno and Borat.

Be prepared for some eye-wateringly close to the bone laughs as his latest character (possibly not the best tourism advert for the Lincolnshire town) is let loose on cinemas in a film which, admittedly, contains more than just a few belly-laughs as he gets involved in all sorts of physically squeamish situations.

Director Leterrier should take the plaudits for keeping a tight reign on him and making sure the film is chock full of daft incidence and action for its very swift running time of 83 minutes. He also stages an opening spy vs. baddies sequence that could rival any Bond film.

Strong, Cruz, Ian McShane, Annabell Wallis as a nymphomaniac and Gabourey Sidibe as a smitten African maid round-out a surprisingly strong, hard-working international cast. Even Baron-Cohen's real-life wife Isla Fisher manages to look commendably straight-faced during the proceedings.
