REVIEW: Hell or High Water should prepare for 'a brace of Oscar nominations'

Hell Or High Water (2016)

Director: David Mackenzie. (15)

Rating: 4/5

Synopsis
Two Texan brothers (Chris Pine, Ben Foster) join forces after Foster is released from prison to regain their family farm before the bank forecloses on it. To do this, they rob other branches of the bank in question across the state so they can buy it back. On their tail is a gruff Ranger on the verge of retirement (Jeff Bridges) who wants to close what is his last big case.

Review by Jason Day

Given the quality of the superbly rough acting from the four male leads in this gritty but also amusing crime drama/neo-western, there might well be a brace of Oscar nominations next year shared out amongst Pine, Foster, Bridges and Gill Birmingham.

My money would be on Foster and Bridges, who both turn in performances that stretch out as languidly as the formless Texan landscapes director Mackenzie (Starred Up) sets his film. Foster in particular shows how commanding a cinematic actor he can be, slipping seamlessly into the skin of a resolutely 'bad 'un'.

Be prepared for some salty, 'Trump-ian' dialogue from Bridges as he jokingly mocks his half native American/half Mexican colleague, which even his character is part ashamed of, given the almost incomprehensible way he mutters them out of the side of his mouth.
