Big Evil Grin, Black Martis and Ivory Yardsale play Milton Keynes Gallery this week

Big Evil Grin, Ivory Yardsale and Black Martis play live at Milton Keynes Gallery this Thursday evening (October 20).

Mixing up groove based post punk inspired by 80s bands Gang of Four, Talking Heads, XTC…with snippets of Afro Beat and Jazz thrown in for good measure, the sailors of Big Evil Grin - Alex, Darren, Max and Lewis, have built a tidy “friendship” making sweet music with whatever instrument is to hand.

Ivory Yardsale are an indecisive experimental pop boy band. Their latest EP A Watch On Each Wrist is centred around a pretend romantic musical adaptation of the 1975 film Jaws, called Curious Jaws. If you like catchy hooks, intricate rhythm sections and ferocious licks you'll be in luck.

MK’s instrumental piano based jazz / post-rock trio Black Martis have a set-up akin to a standard jazz trio, but musically it’s not so. Mixing pounding rock and samba-fueled rhythms, aggressive bass lines and flowing piano riffs (along with the occasional 4/4 time signature), Black Martis create a sound big enough to surprise the unsuspecting onlooker in more ways than one.

Loyalty to any particular genre goes out of the window and what is left is a truly passionate sound unrestrained by what is expected. Imagine if the collective members of And So I Watch You From Afar, Fugazi and Explosions in the Sky were to come together and form a piano trio.  Wow.

Doors at 7.30pm, tickets are a fiver.
