Flamenco jazz guitar ace brings his style to The Stables

Eduardo Niebla, flamenco jazz guitar virtuoso and composer, has been trailblazing his exhilarating flamenco jazz fusion for over 40 years, collaborating with George Michael, Craig David and Juno Reactor as well as some of the top world music, jazz and classical artists of today.

On Thursday (January 25) accompanied by guitarist Matthew Robinson, Eduardo starts a five date UK tour at The Stables.

The programme is a snapshot of Eduardo’s international life; a passionate journey from his early years in Morocco, to his impoverished flamenco roots in Spain and his discovery of jazz and the freedom of improvisation.

Pieces such as “Calle de la Tiña” vividly evoke the life in Albaicín Granada, “Rosie” the exquisite influence of Arabic culture, whilst “My Gypsy Waltz” is a virtuosic dedication to gypsy styles of playing around the world.

“India” and the raga “Bluebells Garden” are directly inspired by Eduardo’s tours there and reveal a profound spirit and poignancy, and his Django Reinhardt inspired number “I Can Fly Now” says it all.

It is this mastery of the guitar and its many disciplines that has indeed enabled Eduardo to fly, musically speaking, creating a highly lyrical and virtuosic style of playing. Over the years Eduardo has collaborated with an eclectic mix of artists on the international stage including Indian sitar virtuoso Nishat Khan, jazz saxophonist Lol Coxhill, Palestinian oud player Adel Salameh, the Dante String Quartet and gypsies from the desert in Rajasthan.

Closer to home Eduardo has composed music for fishermen’s choirs, brass bands, folk musicians, church organ and with Yorkshire poet Ian McMillan and this openness to creating music wherever inspiration lies gives Eduardo’s music a tremendous sense of vitality and universality.

In Eduardo’s words: “I always been trying to find those deep places in my music and notes that you never thought were in there. In this world of changing times for me the power of music to connect us all in harmony is a wonderful thing and a real possibility.”
