On Track: Tom Grennan answers Total MK's questions...

Bedford lad Tom Grennan is live at The Craufurd Arms this Friday (August 12) evening.

It's fair to say he is on the up just now too – 2016 has bought a support slot with The Libertines, a single cut with Chase &Status and now he's inked a deal with Sony Records.

More recently he has been in the studio with producer Charlie Hugall, known for his work with Florence and the Machine and The Maccabees.

He went On Track with Total MK ahead of the Wolverton date...

The song that first awakened your musical senses

I don’t think there was a particular song that ‘awakened’ my musical senses because I've always been listening to music whether it was with my mum or my friends but I'd say it was the first gig I went to.

The Kooks at Cambridge Junction, and from then I was like ‘Yeah, on that’!!!

Physical or digital - how do you take your music?

Both - But I love physical

The first time you thought 'Music - this is the job for me'

First time I thought music was for me when I performed live for the first time! The buzz i got was unparalleled.

Your best on stage memory...

My best stage memory is from walking out in front 50,000 at Wireless for the first time to sing with Case & Status. It just blew my mind!

Worst gig

Worst gig I've ever done was probably a gig in London about two years ago. I'd just come back from Amsterdam a few hours before and needless to say I was in a real pickle. My voice had gone and I could barely stay awake.

What made you take up singing

When an old school mate asked me to help him with his A Level performance after him hearing me sing when I was drunk at a party.

At first I said no but after a bit of persuasion I did it and then got got the bug for it.

Which one song by another artist do you wish you'd have written

I’d probably say Amy Winehouse - Back to Black

And one - by yourself   - which holds special significance

Something In The Water as it’s the song that’s helped me reach what I’ve achieved at the moment.

If you could step into the shoes of another musician, living or dead, who would it be and what would you do?

Imagine stepping into the shoes of Bob Marley or Elvis - MAD!

Are there any current musical influences that you might look to

I try and take influences from every artist I'm feeling whether its music or any other type of performance..

And any genre of music that you simply can't stand?

I can't stand heavy screamo / metal stuff. It's just not for me, but I respect what they do! Screaming for a hour or two must proper hurt your vocals, so big up to whoever does it!

Finally, plug your show at The Craufurd Arms in Milton Keynes.   What can we expect?

I'm really looking forward to coming to Milton Keynes, hopefully you can expect some good music and a lively performance from myself. See you there!
