RECORD STORE DAY: THE COUNTDOWN IS ON

It's really not that long ago that we were being told - by those who supposedly knew best - that vinyl was about to become extinct.

They tried to make music disposable, but vinyl lovers just kept on shopping.

'No-one wants lumps of vinyl when you can download your favourite sounds', said those in the know.

Except that they didn't know.  And plenty of us still go mad for the black stuff with the grooves, and the artwork, and the lyrics and the thank you lists.

Sure, the arrival of CDs left vinyl in a critical condition, and recovery took time.

But recover it has, and independent record store numbers are now at a five year high.

It's a reason to be cheerful, alright, and there's another one on Saturday morning.

Vinyl junkies will pull back the bed covers, reach for the caffeine buzz and make an early visit to their local record retailer, shopping lists in hand, at the eighth annual Record Store Day, when exclusive releases and limited editions will be sitting pretty in the racks.

Milton Keynes is still woefully bereft of an independent record store, so music fans here will need to travel for their fix.

Northampton's Spun Out Records is a good bet, and they always celebrate in style.

They've a bumper crop of cuts ready to roll out too: "We're getting excited and have probably the largest haul of the releases that we've ever had," manager Chris told Total MK.

The store will be packed to the hilt with hundreds of limited edition RSD specials by artists including David Bowie, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, Sex Pistols and The Prodigy, and the music won't be contained to the black stuff either.

Chris has organised a day worth of live sessions from psyche band The Barratts, and live DJ sets (courtesy of Swiss Vince, Big Kev, Muotekk, Punkrokk and more) will span Northern Soul to Punk with everything in-between along the way.

"The support of Record Store Day helps highlight the importance of the High Street record shop, which provide unique musical knowledge, encouragement of local artists and events and a fresh individual presence in our town centres," Chris said.

"We are blessed to have been able to serve the Northampton area for 15 years and hope the encouragement of this day will help cement our next 15 years."
