This week at The Stables: Leo Green, Ian Moss, Gyles Brandreth, The Band Played On & Warren Haynes

While IF: Fest is currently taking big attentions around town, let's not forget that The Stables is still in play with its own schedule of sound, which this week begin on Friday (July 15) in the company of Leo Green and his Sounds of the 50s.

He is 'the greatest sax player I have ever worked with,' said Jerry Lee Lewis, while Jeff Beck declared him to be 'one of the best and craziest saxophonists ever.'

Almost before he was out of his teens, Leo was playing with Lee Lewis, and later joined Van Morrison's band for a five year stretch from 1995.

But his career is full of fabulous musical meetings, and to that end he has also worked with Jools Holland, Lionel Richie, Ronnie Wood, Paul Weller, and many more.

And, when he's not making the music, this master is usually found on the airwaves, waxing lyrical about it.

He has written and presented numerous series on BBC Radio 2, including Celebrating the American Songbook, Friday Night is Music Night, Remembering the Candyman: Sammy Davis Jr and Green on Green.

Now his hit R2 show Sounds of the 50s is live, and the reason for his Wavendon show this week.

The Sounds of the 50's band will be rattling out tunes by artists including Elvis, Buddy Holly, Sam Cooke, Peggy Lee, Cliff Richard, Neil Sedaka and many more, all woven around Leo's stories and sax playing.

“The 50s really was the decade that musically had everything and when you see and hear the songs performed live on stage, there is simply nothing like it – I am very excited!” he said.

From the 50s to the 80s on Saturday (July 16) at the venue with 80s Mania recreating 25 chart-topping pop icons for your pop-pickin' pleasure.
Think Madonna, Wham!, Cutlure Club, Madness and Kim Wilde and you'll be on the money.

There aren't too many tickets left in the box office, mind you, so be quick with those bookings.

Ian Moss, guitarist and singer with Aussie's Cold Chisel (a band that has recently achieved 7,000,000 sales Down Under) rocks up on Stage 2.
It's a rare UK appearance from the fella, who will use this show to share some of the material from his solo career, but with a smattering of Chisel material too.

Gyles Brandreth, the wit and word-meister, former MP and government whip arrives on Sunday night (July 17) with an uproarious and unexpected magic carpet ride around the awesome world of words.

Whether its global domination you are after, or getting some nookie on a Friday night, Gyles has the words that get results!

The Band Played On: A Celebration of Free and Paul Kossoff is for the taking on Tuesday evening (July 19) which marks the 40th passing of Kossoff's untimely death.

More recently, we've mourned the loss of Free's bassist Andy Fraser too, but the music lives on, and wow, what music these guys made together – All Right Now might be the best-known, but it wasn't the best of the best.

That might have been The Hunter, or Wishing Well or A Little Bit of Love, or My Brother Jake, or I'll Be Creepin', or the beautiful Be My Friend...and we could carry on.

Instead, we'll let Terry Slesser, Jaz Lochrie and Paul Buckton take over, bringing those perfect moments in sounds to the front once more.

Warren Haynes has a virtuosic artistry that has to led thousands of unforgettable performances and millions of album and track sales, and the man who has been a part of the Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule and The Dead will be cutting good things at the fret on Wednesday night (July 20).  More for him right here on Total MK tomorrow...
