THIS WEEK AT THE STABLES: MARK GRIST & MC MIXY, ABSOLUTION, JANEY BOMBSHELL, PEGGY SEEGER & MORE

From the Jam Acoustic, featuring former Jam bassist Bruce Foxton, will be live at The Stables on Thursday night (June 4).

The low-key date – also featuring Russell Hastings and pianist Tom Heel – will feature tracks from Bruce's current album together with a heap of Jam classics, and they had 18 Top 40 winners, so there are loads to choose from.

A Q&A session will also figure, so get those questions ready.

It's an all-round winning mix. I guess you could say That's Entertainment.

The Manfreds are on the road again with their Hits, Jazz and Blues show, but tickets have been snapped up. Try your luck for returns, by all means. Just don't hold your breath.

Over on Stage 2, Mark Grist and MC Mixy (above) will be in fierce word battle as they continue their Dead Poets' Death Match tour.

Fancy seeing Sylvia Plath take on Ted Hughes? Or Rabbie Burns against Byron?

During this show, you get to to choose the competitors and you crown the winner.

Mark became Peterborough's Poet Laureate in 2008, Chief Bard of the Fens in 2009, and Edinburgh Fringe Slam Champion in 2010.

Oh, and when he isn't wording his way around the country, he goes back to the classroom as an educational consultant.

MC Mixy is a rapper turner poet, and is always on the go, writing, freestyling and performing poetry and rap all over.

The Scotsman decided he 'Makes Mike Skinner from The Streets look decidedly average,' and they ain't wrong.

If this duo are new to your radar, set a couple of hours aside and hit YouTube – you'll be a convert before the end of the day.

Enjoy the sounds of the 70s on Saturday night (June 6) with the Supersonic 70s Show, led by the Catsuit Wondergirl Janey Bombshell.

From the pin-up pop provided by 'twinkly-eyed' David Essex to the stadium rock of Queen and the glitter-glare of glam's T-Rex and Sweet, this date will deliver it all.

Organisers promise 'a show so mouth-watering, even a Curly Wurly cannot out-chew it!'

Blues band Absolution (below) will be live in Stage 2. The trio with the modern edge released their second album, Dusty Road, last Autumn but have another set to follow before the year end.

Joe Fawcett on guitar

Absolution are for fans of Joe Bonamassa, Free and Rory Gallagher, and their set will mix old classics with new material of their own making.

We won't waste lines telling you about Albert Lee's return as all tickets are gone gone for his return on Sunday, but also on Sunday (June 9) on Stage 2, Anne Janelle will hold court.

The cellist turned songwriter creates songs steeped in the rich traditions of folk, pop and blues.

UK avant jazz-rock bands Soft Machine are back in play – former members guitarist John Etheridge, bassist Roy Babbington and drummer John Marshall will be joined by saxophonist Theo Travis for Tuesday's (June 9) date.

The Saw Doctors Duo of Lee Moran and Anto Thistlethwaite are another sell-out, in the best possible sense. Their Stage 2 show on Tuesday has been fully booked for ages now.

Instead, how about visiting the Wavendon haunt on Wednesday night (June 10) when a folk queen, feminist icon, political activist and eco-warrior is in town.

Peggy Seeger

Peggy Seeger is all of the above, and out on the road to coincide with her 80th birthday.

Joining her for the show – one of 16 shows making up the tour – will be her sons, Calum and Neill MacColl. It's a real family affair, is this.

The boys asked what I wanted for my birthday,” Peggy recalls.

I said it might be my last tour so I wanted them to join me. How many other families are able to request and give a similar gift?'

She is the 'face' of First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, written about her by her late partner, Ewan MacColl, and she was step-mother to the much-missed Kirsty MacColl.

The singer and multi-instrumentalist released her 22nd solo album, Everything Changes late last year: 'With the taboos broken, songs about life, death, sex, drug addiction and tragedy sit surprisingly comfortably alongside humour, irony and some lyrics discovered on the back of a public toilet door.'

Expect nothing short a marvellous night by a musical master.
