GREAT WAR MK: REMEMBERING ALBERT FRENCH AT MK ROSE

Albert French was born in New Bradwell in 1899, on June 22.

On June 15, 1916, he was another casualty of the Great War, killed in action in Ploegsteert Wood, Belgium.

This Sunday (June 14) he will again be remembered at the MK Rose in Campbell Park.

The Wolverton Town Band will be joined for this event by a Marching Band from Ploegsteert, where Albert fell, just a week before his 17th birthday.

The commemorative event will start a short distance away in Margaret Powell Square – by MK Gallery - at 10.15am.

The Belgian Band will process across to the MK Rose where music from the bands will figure, together with a reading and new poem penned by MK's Poet Laureate, Mark Niel called ‘Personal Effects.'

The laying of a wreath and a minute’s silence will follow.

Albert French’s story is always moving. Though I have read about him many a time, there is always a new aspect that catches my attention,” Mark said.

This year it was the few meagre possessions that formed his personal effects that caught my attention and formed the basis of the poem. More about how his Father may have felt, I hope it captures the sense of his sacrifice and the impact his courage continues to have.”
