National fitness day is celebrated by its founders in Milton Keynes

The largest physical activity celebration in the UK took place yesterday (Wednesday), National Fitness Day, founded by Milton Keynes-based énergie Group, was celebrated across Britain.

The fitness franchise group set up a rig in their car park and encouraged neighbouring businesses to take part in short bursts of fitness. énergie clubs across the UK opened their doors for free to all to encourage as many people as possible to get into fitness and enjoy the benefits of a healthier lifestyle.

The énergie Group founded National Fitness Day in 2011 which is now celebrated in schools, gyms, fitness groups, businesses and even by celebrities across the whole of the UK. Close to 100 énergie clubs took part in National Fitness Day and put on free activities with friendly experts on hand to explain how to incorporate fitness into a daily routine.

énergie prides itself on its strong message of ‘We Play’ across the group, a promise to its members that énergie clubs are different and are a place for all abilities and opportunities. On National Fitness Day people saw dozens of activities posted on social media as clubs uploaded their events with the hashtags #WePlay, #énergieFitness and #FitnessDay.

This year, Strictly Come Dancing star Darcey Bussell led a mass-workout in Central London to kick-start National Fitness Day on 27 September.

Darcey was joined by stars from the venue operator Everyone Active’s Sporting Champions programme, with Olympic silver medallist hurdler Colin Jackson and Olympic gold medallist Hockey forward Alex Danson taking part in the early morning workout.

National Fitness Day, co-ordinated by not-for-profit health body ukactive, saw the nation celebrate the fun and thrills of physical activity through a range of free events and activity sessions.

Jan Spaticchia Chairman and Chief Executive at énergie Group said: “We are immensely proud to have started National Fitness Day six years ago and to now see it grow to the size and scale it is today is a wonderful feeling. It’s an important part of our history which is why we ensure all our clubs across the country take part and get people excited about fitness. Yesterday we saw our biggest ever participation in National Fitness Day activities across the country and I would like to congratulate everyone who took part.”
