REVIEW AND SLIDESHOW: VINCENT AND FLAVIA SIZZLE IN DANCE 'TIL DAWN

‘Dance ‘Til Dawn’ The title almost sounds like a challenge – and if it were then dazzling dance duo Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace most certainly exceed expectations. Never mind dancing until dawn, I could watch this pair all week and never tire of their astounding agility, perfect partnership and mesmerising musicality. (And if they wanted me to join in, I’d never be one to turn down the chance to dance... particularly with the flirtatious Vincent!)     Following in the footsteps of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse, Vincent and Flavia star in their very own celebration of the golden age of Hollywood in Dance ‘Til Dawn. This delightful spoof of Hollywood era rom-coms features a cast of clever caricatures, big song and dance numbers and lots of Vincent and Flavia stage-time.   Dance ‘Til Dawn blends the musical theatre of the West End with the ballroom and Latin styles seen on BBC primetime show Strictly Come Dancing – the entertainment programme that first introduced us to this tantalising tango team. Their chemistry and matching broad smiles - coupled with outstanding technique and engaging performances - ensured that the nation fell in love with them. So it came as no surprise that when Vincent and Flavia ventured out from the bright lights of the ballroom and into theatres up and down the county with their first production, Midnight Tango, audiences flocked to see the Buenos Aires-set dance spectacular.   More than half a million people saw Midnight Tango during its three year run in regional theatres across the UK (plus time in the West End). Dance ‘Til Dawn is not just a reworked version of this earlier hit though – it is completely different in story, setting and styling. Set in 1940s Los Angeles, Dance ‘Til Dawn incorporates some incredible sets and plenty of props, transporting the audience from a private investigator’s office to a film studio, a pool party, a gangster’s den and a courthouse - with return visits to the dimly-lit private investigator’s office throughout. Dance 'Til Dawn - Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace - credit Manuel Harlan (3) copy The tale follows the growing relationship between beautiful starlet Sadie Strauss (Flavia) and her one true love, Tony Deluca (Vincent).      Movie star Bobby Burns is meant to have eyes only for Sadie but he has been playing away with glamorous club singer Lana Clemenza – and there are photographs to prove it. Lana is scared - her gangster boyfriend Big Sam will definitely not take too kindly to discovering the truth so she appeals to private investigator Tommy Dubrowski to help her cover the affair up. As Sadie and Tony grow closer, they witness a terrible murder – and Tony finds himself set-up and wrongfully accused. The whole cast is first-class. The show is narrated by jaded detective Tommy Dubrowski (Teddy Kempner) who is happy to spill the beans and dish the dirt on every facet of the story (while also poking fun at the genre and pointing out perceived plot inconsistencies). His one-liners are hilarious and delivered with sharp comic timing – and the comedy soundtrack used to illustrate some of his most slapstick moments raises plenty of laughs from the audience. With songs including Feeling Good, I’m a Woman, Stand By Me, Moon River and That’s Life as well as contemporary hits Rumour Has It and Runaway Baby the supporting performers shine in their solo singing moments. Still, there is no doubt that Vincent and Flavia are the stars of this show (as soon as they make their first – separate - entrances audience members cheer and clap) and they demonstrate their star quality in a wide range of dance styles. A romantic waltz, a nimble quickstep and a creative medley all precede their trademark Argentine Tango – and it is worth waiting for. As the only cast members who do not speak, the duo communicate everything they need to through their dancing – every gesture, every facial expression, every embrace helps to tell their story. Comedy, song and dance, AND Vincent and Flavia – quite simply, Dance ‘Til Dawn will sweep you off your feet!     ‘Dance ‘Til Dawn’ continues at Milton Keynes Theatre until Saturday.
