THEATRE: GOODNIGHT MISTER TOM MAKES A WELCOME RETURN TO MILTON KEYNES

The television version – starring the late, great John Thaw - is so warming and wonderful that we've only just watched it (again), and the stage version of Goodnight Mister Tom is every bit as life-affirming and lovely.

And it makes a very welcome return to Milton Keynes Theatre from Tuesday (March 1).

This revival makes its way to us direct from an acclaimed winter season in the West End, where it did a grand trade at the box office too.

During the dangerous build up to the Second World War, young William Beach is evacuated to the beautiful Dorset countryside.

A scruffy, undernourished, abused little scrap of a boy, he is foisted on the grumpy, reclusive Tom Oakley.

Except that 'Mr Tom' played by David Troughton (the voice of Tony in radio soap The Archers), actually has a heart of gold.

Tom lost his wife and son years ago, but beneath the surface his grief bubbles, as raw today as it ever was.

William's terrible home life has stunted his young years and made for a terrified youngster.

Gradually, the young boy and the village elder forge a heart-warming relationship, as little by little Tom and William find happiness, and start to enjoy life again.

William makes a wonderful pal in the village too.

But then the happiness is shattered when William is summoned back to London by his mother... We're welling up just thinking about what happens...

If you are an emotional sort, whose bottom lip wobbles a little too easily, Mister Tom will definitely open your floodgates and set the tears free!

This Olivier award-winning Chichester Festival Theatre production will be a winner with one and all, as a critic for the Times has observed: 'It ends as children's theatre should,' they wrote, 'Adults audibly snivelling and children breathlessly attentive.'

Book your seat for a splendid piece of work that will tug at your heartstrings, without question.

Show time is 7pm nightly through to Saturday (March 5), with matinee performances on Wed/Thur at 1.30pm and Saturday at 2.30pm.

Tickets start at £12.50. Call the box office on 0844 871 7652 or visit www.atgtickets.com/miltonkeynes
