THE GARDEN SEASON: THIS WEEK'S INSTALMENT

Dame Cleo Laine throws open the gates to her fabulous Rectory Gardens in Wavendon once more this weekend (July 5 and 6), and presents another two days of delicious daytime deliveries. On Saturday morning, at 11.30am, Enrico Tomasso will present The Trumpet Greats, paying tribute to the jazz masters who have been his inspiration - from Louis Armstrong to Clark Terry, and a fair few in-between. From 2.30pm, Tina May (above) returns with Divas, a celebration of the last century's star singers of the female kind - Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Lottie Lenya and Edith Piaf will definitely get a look in, when Tina arrives with her band. Ticket are on sale at £12. Then on Sunday, the Eddie Harvey Award (below) Band go live at 11.30am.   MPMG EddieHarvey copy   Harvey was a force to be reckoned with in jazz - a cracking musician and a man who wass an educator of the genre. Eddie, who passed away in 2012, knew his music inside and out, and played every kind of jazz - from early Dixieland to modern. He also had a long-time association with Sir John Dankworth, and when John passed away in 2010, Eddie was one of the first to pay tribute to his longtime friend and collaborator: 'He was an astute businessman and a wonderful musician, and could hold a complicated musical idea in his mind before writing it down..." he told me. "He was also a kind man - he commissioned me to write 12 pieces for the band to help me put a deposit on my house!  He would do anything to help the cause of his great love - jazz." It is rather fitting that this session of sound - in aid of the Jazz Arranger of the Year Award set up in Eddie's  memory, is happening at John's family home. Band-wise, it's a family affair, of sorts - comprising some of Eddie's music making pals, pooling talents to deliver a programme rich in standards and firm favourites. Tickets are £12 and worth every penny. Saxophonist Simon Spillett takes over at 2.30pm, revisiting the music of Miles Davis for your musical delectation. Among the band of brilliance up with him, trumpeter Henry Lowther, another player with real pedigree. To book for any of these shows, call the usual Stables box office on MK 280800. There are lots of shows in Milton Keynes this weekend, but no other will be housed in such a picturesque setting, in the presence of jazz royalty...
