Far From the Madding Crowd (2015)

Director: Thomas Vinterberg.

4stars-Very good lots to enjoy 1

Synopsis

Independent minded Bathsheba Everdeen (Mulligan) is proposed to by farmer Gabriel Oak (Schoenaerts). She turns him down, declaring she prefers to be single and not owned by a man, sentiments she repeats to a rich landowner (Sheen) after she mistakenly sends him a Valentines card. Tragedy unfolds when she impulsively marries the handsome army Sergeant Troy (Sturridge).

Review

Ahhh, now here is a lush and well-crafted adaptation of a famous English novel, funnily enough directed by a Dane (Thomas Vinterberg) and co-starring a Belgian (Matthias Schoenaerts - is there a major drama being released at the moment that doesn't star him?) and a Welshman (Michael Sheen).

In some respects, you can't go wrong with Hardy - lyrical, dreamy and set in impossibly beautiful corners of his idyllic and fictional 'Wessex' (Dorset, Wiltshire), Vinterberg has some freedom to point his camera at leisure and seduce his actors in delivering an expert menage a quatre.

Mulligan shows what a commanding presence she is on screen now, skilfully dithering with her many assorted suitors of which Sheen, as the neurotically unravelling Boldwood, is the best.
