The Queen's Corgi (2019)

Animation

Rating: 3/5 - worth watching

Synopsis
Rex (voiced by Jack Whitehall) is Queen Elizabeth II’s (Julie Walters) ‘top dog’, the favourite of her four loyal corgis. He is imperious, lazy and manipulative, but his peers put up with his preening and attention-hogging.

But after President Trump (John Culshaw) visits and Rex refuses to cement a canine special relationship with Trump’s own corgi, the ensuing diplomatic fall out leaves Rex out in the cold, figuratively and literally. Betrayed by his pal Charlie (Matt Lucas), Rex ends up in a kennel and must man-up to get back to his beloved Queenie and take his new love, mongrel Wanda (Sheridan Smith), with him.

Review by @Reelreviewer

I'm no fan of Jack Whitehall (uber-sarcasm king of British 'comedy') or animated films, so I approached this cartoon take on the private life of Queen Elizabeth's canines with a huge dollop of apprehension.

Still, in spite of my finely honed cinematic prejudices, I quite liked this effort.

Whitehouse provides the perfect voice for the spoiled and imperious pooch who ends up in the pound with a load of motley mutts. He is supported by some superb vocalists, the best of which are impressionists Jon Culshaw and Debra Stephenson who play 'Dorald' and Melania Trump.

The jokes come close to being eye-wateringly adult but the film gets a PG rating so, parents, prepare for laughs that are aimed firmly at your level.
