Director: Burr Steers.
Synopsis
After a zombie apocalypse in the late 18th century, London has been walled off in case of further outbreaks of the undead, a huge moat encircling it and with only one bridge in or out.
In rural Hertfordshire just north of the capital, Mr Bennett (Dance) has trained his five daughters to become zombie hunting warriors, but their mother (Phillips) is only interested in finding them good, and by that she means rich, husbands.
Eldest daughter Elizabeth (James), the strongest and most intelligent of the Bennett girls, finds herself courted by the proud and snobbish Mr D’Arcy (Riley), himself a champion zombie killer.
The two are instantly attracted to each other but their personalities mean they clash from the start.
Review, by Jason Day
For anyone who has even a passing acquaintance with me, they'll know there are three types of film that instantly grab my attention: disaster drama, period films and zombie horror.
Clearly, this one went straight into my 'to see' list. Was I dreaming, that such cinematic perfection could possibly be produced?
Maybe I was getting a tad too excited for the finished result, an adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's daft mash-up of Jane Austen's classic romantic novel with a few zombie references pasted into the text, whilst fun and having plenty of goo and gore, doesn't push quite as far in the 'weird' stakes as it could have.
Refreshingly, the Austen bits are kept to a minimum in this briskly plotted piece, with a good double-act in Lily James (as Elizabeth Bennett) and Sam Riley (as a 60-a-day sounding D'Arcy), never happier than when exchanging withering comments...or kicking each other across a drawing room.
