Milton Keynes-based Alina orchestra believe that music is for everyone. They got in touch with Total MK to explain what they are about...
'We will gently introduce you to various musical styles and sounds, encourage you to listen to different elements of music and guide you towards other pieces you may like, and if you can’t come to our concerts, for whatever reason, we will come to you!
Musicians will perform ‘Band in a Van’ concerts in the heart of your community, creating a relaxed atmosphere with a lot of chat to make you feel comfortable.
We believe that to be part of a community, we need to serve the needs of that community. Are you an amateur music-maker? Perhaps you still play and want to be part of a band or spend a day with fellow musicians? We will help you.
We’re going to create a series of ‘Come and Play’ days – firstly dust off that instrument, pay a fee to participate for a day, then come along. You’ll be sitting with other amateur music-makers as well as professionals from the orchestra.
Our Musical Director, Hilary Davan Wetton will lead you through a number of pieces of music during the day, then at the end of the day, you will perform a small concert to an audience, which may include your family and friends. This is just one of the many ways we are seeking to serve our local community.

We will work with as many other community groups as we can and for people to think of the orchestra as a ‘Resource’ – local music hubs, choirs, musical groups, galleries, etc. to create fantastic partnerships for concerts, events or community projects, as we can.
We want everyone to find their ‘voice’ and have an opportunity to be part of a thriving arts organisation. We believe music is at the heart of wellbeing and will promote our work with mental health services, dementia care services, homeless charities, schools and any other group who might benefit from our services.
We will locate local musicians for the orchestra where possible, provide opportunities for young aspiring soloists, composers and conductors because everyone needs a chance to showcase their skills!
Alina wants to nurture a strong sense of community through the events it delivers, giving our audience and wider community a feeling of pride and well-being in creative achievement.'
