Alt-folk songwriter and fingerstyle guitarist, Chris Cleverley, plays The Stables in Milton Keynes on Saturday (November 23) to support the recent release of his second studio album ‘We Sat Back and Watched it Unfold.'
This body of new work addresses a selection of 21st Century society’s most pertinent, challenging concerns through Cleverley’s incomparable brand of contemporary folk music.
Diverse lyrical themes from deteriorating anxious minds through to damaging gender constructs blend with an experimental guitar fingerstyle, akin to Nic Jones and John Martyn.
The bold, progressive song structures reflect influence of North American songwriters Jeff Buckley, Elliott Smith & Anais Mitchell, and showcase an all-star cast of UK folk luminaries including Hannah Martin (Edgelarks) and Sam Kelly.

The date will showcase Cleverley’s dynamic solo live performance, characterised by intricate acoustic guitar, Appalachian-style banjo and an engaging anecdotal style.
The new material explores a pervasive sense of anxiety afflicting our modern age.
Whilst shining an honest light on visceral subjects, Cleverley maintains a balanced, compassionate and hopeful approach, revealing a brave new voice in the ongoing Mental Health conversation: “The album isn’t ‘about’ mental health exclusively, but is the product of many related conversations & testimonies.
Chris said: "There’s a lot of lives in these songs; anxiety and panic underpin much of their imagery. It’s an album to offer understanding to these voices.”
