Forest Folk and Roots is gearing up for a fantastic night of live blues music at The College Arms Bar in Cranfield on Friday (September 15) when it brings Nottinghamshire’s finest blues export Benjamin Bassford to the stage.
Singer-songwriter Benjamin is a dynamic artist who can sometimes be found rambling with an acoustic solo sound, and who sometimes leads a band fueled with a grit and distortion, doused and nuanced in blues, roots, folk and country.
Benjamin's style of performance can be compared in some respects to his historic blues influences such as Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf.
But while he tips his hat to the influences from which his sound has grown,he also brings his own cards to the table in a unique way. Using finger-picking and slide he play a variety of songs from covers to his own original works.
He has issued two EP’s 'Songs from the Blue Door and 'Road Sickness' to date.
If you are planning on attending, you'll want to be seated nice and early, as the FF&R folks have booked Levi Cuss to support Benjamin - the raw honesty typical in Cuss’ roots/blues music speaks to a life of redemption; from troubles with the law, addiction, incredible sadness and loss, to love, strength and perseverance.
After the release of his debut album, 'It’s War' in 2013, Cuss has been touring throughout Western Canada.
He also headed south, to Nashville, Tennessee to record his second album, 'Night Thief', which quickly garnered attention in the roots/blue scene.
His musical influences include the likes of Jason Isbell, Townes Van Zandt, and Steve Earle; the dark, honesty in his music reflects these influences.
Levi is over here for a couple of months playing blues clubs and festivals.
It's a knockout bill for you, at a reasonable price - £10 (£5 for students).
The College Arms Bar is on the College Road - next to the Santander Bank.
Doors open at 7:30pm with live music from 8pm.
