The First Ladies of Country, a collection of the most celebrated female country artists of all time, hit retailer shelves on Monday.
The double CD set spans more than 50 years and boasts classic recordings from artists including Patsy Cline, Dolly Carter, June Carter Cash and Tammy Wynette.
This is an exploration of the very best of the genre – then and now.
Modern day superstars including Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, First Aid Kit and Miranda Lambert have all found a home on the release too.
“Since the invention of the phonograph, women have created some of the most iconic recordings ever made across all genres of music, but nowhere has the female voice been more powerful or consistent than in Country music,” said Bob Harris OBE.
“From the very beginning of Country's commercial history in 1924 when Columbia captured the mountain music of Aunt Samantha and Eva Davis in a makeshift studio in New York, to the present day multi-million selling production houses of Nashville's Music Row, the women of country have been at the heart of the music, their songs a source of inspiration, desperation, comfort and joy, reflecting and profoundly influencing the lives of their fans,” Harris added.
Pioneers, icons, songwriters and modern day superstars fill every one of the 43 tracks here, with other artists including Billie Jo Spears, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Alison Krauss, Gretchen Peters and The Judds.
