Ballet fans in the new city are invited to fall in love with a performance of Romeo & Juliet by San Francisco Ballet at Milton Keynes Cineworld this Valentine’s Day, writes Georgina Butler.
Showing as part of a Great American Dance series being presented at the cinema, Shakespeare’s tragic tale of two star-crossed lovers makes for a blazing ballet.
Guaranteed to capture the hearts of dedicated dance devotees and curious cinema-goers alike, San Francisco’s glorious production of Romeo & Juliet has played to sold-out theatres since its creation by the Company’s artistic director and principal choreographer Helgi Tomasson in 1994.
Romeo & Juliet is set to Prokofiev’s powerful score and boasts sublime romance, riveting battles and compelling drama - all portrayed through breath-taking dance.
Two of the Company’s most celebrated principal dancers, Maria Kochetkova and Davit Karapetyan, dance the title roles in the performance, which was filmed at the War Memorial Opera House, San Francisco in May 2015.
Lincoln Center at the Movies: Great American Dance is the first ever series of dance screenings from the United States to be shown in cinemas around the world, bringing divine dancing to a global audience. The series features spectacular performances by four of America’s leading dance companies – Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ballet Hispanico, New York City Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet.
Milton Keynes Cineworld, Bedford Cineworld and Dunstable Grove Theatre are among the venues which will screen San Francisco Ballet’s Romeo & Juliet on Sunday February 14 2016.
