THIS WEEK AT THE STABLES: MITCH BENN, HANNAH'S YARD, MK ROCK CHOIR, PETE FIRMAN, AVERY SUNSHINE & MORE

Comedy musician Mitch Benn delights in the joys of being a sceptic in his new show, Don't Believe a Word which is at The Stables this Thursday evening (June 30).

I'm a sceptic. But don't take my word for it. Or indeed anybody's. For anything...” Mitch says.

It's a show promising to make you laugh a lot and think a bit (the perfect balance after a few days at work) as Mitch debunks myths, exposes nonsense and grapples with the very nature of knowledge itself extolling the virtues of an evidence-based approach to life.

Along the way there will be amusing consequences and songs too.

This is the penultimate date of this tour, but ever busy Mitch won't be quiet for long – following his successful 'Mitch Benn Is The 37th Beatle' delivery in 2015, another three specials on musical icons Bob Dylan, David Bowie and Elvis have recently been aired on BBC Radio 4, namely The Freewheelin' Mitch Benn, Mitch Benn Is The Fat Pink Duke and Mitch Benn Has Left The Building.

We look forward to the next instalment, but first to address those matters of scepticism. Show time is 8pm.

Local talent is put in the spotlight at the Wavendon venue over in the snug of Stage 2, when Hannah's Yard take control.

The nucleus of this collective is Hannah Layton Turner, and together with her band of four music makers this evening, Hannah's Yard will dig into material set to figure on the forthcoming debut album.

There will be time for a few eclectic, choice cover versions too.

Legend of a Band: Tribute to the Moody Blues is your booking for Friday night (July 1) bringing classic cuts like Nights in White Satin, Go Now and Isn't Life Strange out into the open.

Particular notice should be paid to those bringing the music to the fore too – drummer Gordy Marshall and keyboard player Paul Bliss performed with the band for more than two decades.

Joining them at play will be 10cc's current frontman Mick Wilson, Tim Maple (guitarist for Leona Lewis) and bassists Malcolm Moore, who hits the notes with James Blunt and Joss Stone.

Pete Firman is the UK's top comedic conjurer, and he's back with his considerable bag of tricks again on Stage 2 on Friday night.

If you've not seen him at The Stables previously, there's a good chance you've seen him on the small screen – with The Sarah Millican Television Programme, The John Bishop Show and The Magicians all employing his crowd-pleasing comedy and jaw-dropping music.

There may be the occasional choice word and a smattering of adult material included, so under 16s and those of you with a particularly pure mind, might like to miss this one out. Everyone else, roll-up, roll-up for all the fun of the Firman!

The New York Times says that Avery Sunshine has a 'jazzy gospel voice that could loosen bricks from their mortar,' which is particularly bad news for any brickies working close to where she performs.

But while that impressive phrase isn't to be taken in the literal sense, her vibrant blend of soul, jazz, gospel and R&B is pretty perfect.

She once opened for the late, great BB King at The Royal Albert Hall and if you want to check her out ahead of Saturday's (July 2) show, her current album release is The Sunroom.

The Hallows have Stage 2 covered, but that show is a long-time booked up.

On Sunday night (July 3), the spotlight once again shines on local talent with Milton Keynes Rock Choir.

Under the leadership of Lizzie Dean, more than 100 members of the choir will perform a selection of fun, upbeat, feel-good songs from the Rock Choir repertoire.

Nationwide, the brand has more than 20,000 members in more than 300 communities, and this is a chance to hear the MK side sing out.

Last up this week is the return of Tunde (top) voice of the Lighthouse Family.

This show is an opportunity to show the fruition of time spent with Lighthouse Family producer Mike Peden. The duo reunited to record a selection of troubadour-influenced tracks – classic and lesser-known gems by artists including Cat Stevens, Van Morrison, Bill Withers, David Gates and Barry White.
