This week at The Stables: With Tom Paxton, Popa Chubby, Alex Cornish, Ronnie Scott's All Stars, Jo Brand, Ruby Wax & more...

Tom Paxton makes his return to The Stables this Thursday evening (January 19).

Tom has had a music career spanning more than 50 years. The five decades have seen the recording of many enduring songs, and thousands of live performances around the world, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2009.

Celebrated amongst his peers and audiences alike, he is one of the most highly regarded, loved, and best known folk singer/songwriters of his generation.

With timeless classics such as; The Last Thing On My Mind, Bottle Of Wine, and Ramblin' Boy, he portrays through his songs and his famously generous nature a true desire for justice, and to bring people together.

Tom Paxton is a joyful treat, a revered figure in folk music, and a voice of his generation. Support is coming from special guests Cathy & Marcy.

Popa Chubby, it's a great name, don't you think? And his ability on the guitar is every bit as awesome.

The New Yorker has been hard rocking the blues for more than a quarter of a century, with an outpouring he describes as 'the Stooges meets Buddy Guy, Motorhead meets Muddy Waters and Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson.'

It's pretty special, as you can hear directly on his most recent opus, Catfish.

Featured numbers include the hardcore inspired ‘Motörhead Saved My Life’ when Popa tells the tale of how Lemmy gave a young man identity and meaning. Popa's personal favorite though, is an instrumental offering entitled ‘Blues For Charlie’. Ted Horowitz (to give Popa his 'other' name) wrote and recorded this after the two massacres endured by his beloved adopted second home Paris.

Take a chance on his show on Friday (Jan 20), and you'll return home smiling.

The Ronnie Scott's All Stars present The Ronnie Scott's Story on Saturday night (Jan 21), bringing together rare archive photos and video footage with narration and sound to give the viewer a celebration of the world famous club.

Settle back and learn the history of the small club with the big reputation - showing its rise from basement bar for jamming local musicians to internationally acclaimed jazz venue.

Singer-songwriter Alex Cornish has four albums from which to pick for his Stage 2 set on Saturday night. The Radio 2 favourite rocks up here as part of an acoustic tour to plug album number five...

Back to Bacharach celebrates the magical music of one of the most accomplished popular composers of the 20th century, on Sunday night (Jan 22), from Arthur's Theme to Magic Moments and Alfie.

And that's your lot for this week, seeing as how the 'girls who give rise to grins', aka Jo Brand and Ruby Wax have already shifted all tickets for their respective dates at the venue on Tuesday (Jan 24) and Wednesday (Jan 25) evening.
