Five hundred and forty-three pigeons were released at Bletchley Park yesterday morning - the birds were taking part in a 120-mile race to commemorate the centenary of World War I and the important role that homing pigeons played.
The sponsorships and donations raised were donated to Combat Stress, the UK’s leading charity for veterans’ mental health.
The race was shown support by many senior parliamentarians including the Prime Minister Theresa May, who sponsored five birds, and The Lord Speaker.
Each bird was designated to an MP or peer and the winning pigeon was sponsored by Alberto Costa, MP for South Leicestershire who made their flight back home in two hours, four minutes and 46 seconds.
Second place went to Nick Boles, MP for Grantham and Stamford’s bird and in third place was Baroness Manningham-Buller.
