An array of giant national and local companies from all over the UK is coming to Milton Keynes to help 270 young people from across the region understand the jobs of tomorrow, thanks to Milton Keynes College teaming up with the TeenTech charity and their CEO and former Tomorrow’s World presenter, Maggie Philbin.
Five new TeenTech festivals are being funded by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) as a way of inspiring school students to aim for careers on the cutting edge of modern technology.
The festival in Milton Keynes on 11th July at The Ridgeway Centre will launch a series of initiatives in regional Primary and Secondary schools.
Companies including Microsoft, Anglian Water, Bletchley Park and Vodafone will be doing their best to fire the imaginations of young people to encourage them to keep up their study of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects.
The intention of the day will be to give them an early opportunity to discover what a career in these areas might be like in the real world.
The exciting activities on show from some of the thirty companies taking part will include:
Encounter Edu - Underwater VR
Hybrid Air Vehicles - Microbit controlled lighter-than-air vehicle
NiftyLift - specialist hydraulic arm
WYG - ultra-modern urban design
Microsoft - The Maker Champion coding challenge
Bletchley Park - Codebreaking challenge
Anglian Water – Construction challenge
Milton Keynes College - Lego robots
Dr Julie Mills OBE, CEO and Group Principal of Milton Keynes College says, “Creating opportunities for young people in our region to explore their careers choices is at the heart of everything we do.
"With our links with local employers and our recently announced successful bid to build an Institute of Technology at Bletchley Park, TeenTech is an excellent fit for us and we are excited to be able to bring the event to the region.”
TeenTech founder Maggie Philbin OBE says “We’re very excited to have our first Milton Keynes Festival this year in partnership with Milton Keynes College, which will invite attendees from across the Oxford - Milton Keynes - Cambridge corridor. With support from DCMS [Department for Culture, Media & Sport] we’ve been able to expand our festivals to reach even further across the UK and we’re proud to be engaging more young people than ever before, supporting them to become the innovators of tomorrow.”
The event is already proving incredibly popular and is fully booked up for this year.
