This year’s Milton Keynes Archaeology Day was another successful and well-attended event, attracting people of all ages from MK and beyond to enjoy the talks, displays and activities on offer.
This year’s event was held in the Church of Christ the Cornerstone and was officially opened by the Mayor of Milton Keynes, Cllr Martin Petchey.
The Mayor also launched a new book detailing the excavation of an Anglo-Saxon cemetery in Wolverton – Wulfhere’s People.
“I was delighted to attend this year’s event in a mayoral capacity. I enjoyed speaking to local groups about their recent findings and projects, as well as listening to the many fantastic speakers,” said the Mayor, Cllr Petchey, himself a former professional archaeologist.
Displays and activities were provided by groups from the local area, including Woughton Heritage, the Portable Antiquities Scheme and the Upper Nene Archaeological Society.
Members of Magiovinium Metal Detecting club proved popular with their displays of artefacts and coinage, as did the children’s activities provided by a team from Border Archaeology.
An audience of 70 gathered in the afternoon to hear about recent archaeological work in Newport Pagnell and Little Brickhill, as well as on the east and west expansion areas of the city.
The final talk of the day was delivered by Eliott Wragg of the Thames Discovery Programme, who delivered a lively account of the archaeological investigation of the river foreshore in Greater London, detailing finds from the Mesolithic through to World War 2.
MK Archaeology Day will return to the Church of Christ the Cornerstone on Saturday 2 November 2019.
