Dr Dee's Daughter and the Philosopher's Stone brings puppetry and storytelling to town

Dr Dee's Daughter and the Philosopher's Stone is a new family-friendly show, which blends music, puppetry and storytelling, with themes of history, magic and science.

It is aimed at families with children aged between seven and 12, and visits Milton Keynes on Saturday (May 27).

The award-winning recorder quartet, Palisander is joined by puppet theatre company Rust and Stardust to deliver this unique, family-friendly show. Serving as a brilliant introduction to recorders from six inches to six feet tall, Dr Dee’s Daughter and the Philosopher’s Stone tells the story of Katherine, the daughter of Dr Dee – alchemist, astronomer and magician in the court of Queen Elizabeth I – and his abandoned quest to discover the Philosopher’s Stone, the Elixir of Life.

Lydia Gosnell, member of Palisander, said: ‘The show is a fantastic way of introducing children to a wide range of music, on an instrument they are familiar with, without being a traditional formal concert. By collaborating with Rust and Stardust, we have created a unique blend of theatre and music, which has been exciting to develop and has proved popular with audiences and critics.’

Eleanor Conlon of Rust & Stardust, added: ‘The show isn't just a play with music, it's a total theatrical experience. The recorder quartet dance, speak and interact with the puppets. Everything you see is completely collaborative, from the development of the script and the music to the creation of the puppets and costumes.’

Looking through her father's old diaries, Katherine reads about his abandoned quest to discover the Philosopher's Stone. Katherine experiments, and manages to summon a playful spirit, Madimi. With Madimi's aid, Katherine starts her own search for the Philosopher's Stone. But using Dee's magic crystal has opened a pathway and not all those who use it are as friendly as Madimi...
