With Christmas just around the corner, now is the perfect time to see English National Ballet’s spellbinding ‘Nutcracker’, writes Georgina Butler.
Fortunately for ballet lovers here in the new city, the company’s renowned dancers will perform the production at Milton Keynes Theatre this month, ahead of a longer run at the London Coliseum over the Yuletide period.
English National Ballet’s ‘Nutcracker’ is a festive, fun-filled fantasy adventure which appeals to audience members of all ages.
Set on Christmas Eve, the narrative – brought to life through dazzling dance, Tchaikovsky’s glorious score and stunning scenery and costumes – clearly conveys the magic and wonder of the season.
Children and adults alike will be wowed by the ballet’s picturesque opening, showing guests arriving in wintery style at a house in Edwardian London for a fun festive gathering.
The host’s young daughter, Clara, is thrilled to receive an enchanted Nutcracker doll as a gift from an enigmatic relative. Upon waking from a disturbed sleep, she creeps downstairs after the party has finished to further admire her present.
Suddenly, as the grandfather clock chimes for midnight, Clara is drawn into a dreamlike world where everything has been transformed but some things are strangely familiar. Here, she finds herself battling with a Mouse King, meeting a handsome stranger and being whisked off to the glistening Land of Snow.
Adventures abound in this family-friendly ballet. From being caught up in a whirlwind of glistening snowflakes to soaring skywards in a colourful hot air balloon; enjoying a beautiful cascade of blooming flowers, to being entertained by an assortment of awesome dancers celebrating the world’s diversity – Clara’s voyage of discovery is a truly marvellous spectacle.
Whether you are a committed balletomane or a curious newcomer, don’t miss this opportunity to join Clara on her journey full of drama and delights!
