In Review: Bedknobs and Broomsticks comes to Milton Keynes

This week at Milton Keynes Theatre you can transport yourself into the magical world of Disney's much loved classic Bedknobs and Broomsticks, writes Chris Gregg.

The original film ranks alongside Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as an enduring family favourite, two films which also famously featured songs by the Sherman Brothers.

This stage version by award-winning producers Candice Edmunds and Jamie Harrison is on its world premiere tour and features some familiar songs including Portobello Road, The Age Of Not Believing and The Beautiful Briny.

There's a talented cast led by West End star Dianne Pilkington as Miss Eglantine Price, the mysterious lady who takes in the three wartime orphans when they are evacuated from London.

Upon discovering that she is to be a trainee witch, the Rawlins children join forces to search for a secret spell that will defeat the enemy once and for all. Armed with an enchanted bedknob, a bewitched broomstick and a magical flying bed, they encounter surprising new friendships on their journey from Portobello Road to the depths of the beautiful briny sea in a world full of magic and adventure.

Alongside Dianne is Charles Brunton who gives a great performance as Emelius Browne and the Rawlins kids were brilliantly played by Poppy Houghton as Carrie and Dexter Barry as Paul, although there are four actors sharing the role of each of the children.

This is a production which will captivate children and adults alike with some phenomenal magical special effects including the iconic flying bed which is utterly convincing, created by 'Illusion Consultant' Chris Fisher of the Magic Circle.
