Total MK writer Georgina Butler continues her pick of the MK Theatre productions from 2014
At Number 3: West Side Story
Musical fans have been spoilt for choice this year – as well as Wicked we have been treated to timeless hits West Side Story and Singin’ in the Rain.
Despite being written almost sixty years ago, West Side Story (the exhilarating contemporary retelling of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ set to an infectious soundtrack with choreography by Jerome Robbins) continues to strike a chord with audiences.
I found myself on an emotional rollercoaster when the show ran at Milton Keynes Theatre in June.
Audiences were enthralled from start to tragic finish as the blossoming romance of two star-crossed lovers unfolded onstage, amidst the violence of the rivalry between two teenage street gangs.
Sparks flew between the Jets and Sharks – it was a thrill to see men dancing with such unrestrained athleticism, energy and strength.
The whole cast delivered the blend of modern ballet, tough urban styles and Latin influences with aplomb and all of those unforgettable songs were playing in my head for days after the final carefully choreographed curtain call!
