The Glyndebourne Tour makes its annual visit to Milton Keynes next week

Milton Keynes Theatre will host the Glyndebourne Tour from Tuesday (November 27), as the event celebrates its 50th anniversary.

The Glyndebourne Tour was launched in 1968 by Sir George Christie, then chairman of Glyndebourne, whose parents John Christie and Audrey Mildmay founded the Glyndebourne Festival in 1934.

Glyndebourne Tour first visited Milton Keynes Theatre in 1999 and has returned every year since.

The aims of the Glyndebourne Tour are to make Glyndebourne’s productions accessible to larger audiences and to champion new talent.

Among the internationally acclaimed artists whose performances with Glyndebourne Tour helped establish their careers are Robin Ticciati, Gerald Finley, Emma Bell, Alfie Boe, Roberto Alagna, Edward Gardner and Kate Royal.

Over its 50 years, the Glyndebourne Tour has: presented 71 different operas by 36 different composers; visited 42 venues across the UK and 7 abroad; performed to a total audience of over 2 million; staged six new commissions; enabled 30,000 students to experience opera at a subsidised rate via Performances for Schools, which began in 2006.

The 2018 Glyndebourne Tour will feature Glyndebourne’s first-ever production of Massenet’s great operatic fairytale Cendrillon and a revival of Tom Cairns’s opulent production of Verdi’s La traviata.

A third event will take audiences behind the scenes of the creation of opera. Actor and comedian Chris Addison will present La traviata: Behind the Curtain, taking an in-depth look at Verdi’s masterpiece, with performance extracts featuring cover singers from the Tour 2018 production.
