WADDLE ALONG TO THE PENGUIN CHARITY WEEKEND AT WOBURN SAFARI PARK

The Animal Encounters team at Woburn Safari Park continues its special charity weekend throughout the Bank Holiday weekend, to raise much needed awareness and money to help protect the Humboldt penguin in the wild.

Funds will go to the Punta San Juan Project, which works in Peru to protect the Humboldt penguin along with sea lions, guano birds and sea otters.

The Humboldt penguin is vulnerable to extinction and there are thought to be as few as 20 breeding colonies left in the wild, with populations decreasing annually.

Visitors to the Park are invited to help raise funds and awareness for the project’s marine reserve peninsula, which is currently home to Peru's largest breeding population of Humboldt penguins.

There will be lots of fun activities to get involved in, including raffles, lucky dips and special keeper talks and demonstrations throughout the weekend.

Woburn Safari Park successfully raised over £2,000 for the Punta San Juan Projectin 2015 and the Animal Encounters team is excited to support the project again this year.

The aim of the Punta San Juan Project is to protect areas of guano reserves which are crucial to the breeding of the Humboldt penguins.  Guano is the excrement of sea birds and their droppings are high in nitrates, meaning they are harvested every year to improve Peruvian agriculture.

The project has now created a sustainable harvesting programme to allow farmers to harvest guano without directly affecting the breeding colonies of the Humboldt penguin and other sea birds.

You can join in all of the fun and activities at no extra cost to standard Park admission, through to Monday.

Woburn Safari Park is open daily between 10am and 5pm.
