September 6-9 and 13- 16 

Heritage Open Days are back, and this year organisations and venues are opening their doors and holding events across not one, but two, weekends.

This year, Heritage Open Days are celebrating Extraordinary Women with a ‘Votes for Women’ exhibition and ‘She got the vote: Stories of Bucks women who were first able to vote in 1918’ at MK Central Library.

There will also be ‘access all areas’ tours of buildings around MK, free admission to museums, talks, walks and more. See the brochure here

September 14-16

Groundwork Weekender is a free celebration of MK’s heritage, landscape, people and sounds, curated by Tracing the Pathway.

The three-day programme, interlaces performances, walks, exhibitions, talks, films and, the premier of 11 unique artist projects. Find out more here

Come along for the book launch and reading tour of ‘The MK Myth’ by Phil Smith.

An alternative visitor guide with a story that takes the reader on a walk through Milton Keynes as it follows ‘K’, the main character, on her journey through the city, discovering its heritage and hidden wonders. Find out more here

September 15

The Festival of curves, detours and slopes celebrates the launch of the new Redway A-B guide by Hayley Newman, with a special performative tour of MK’s redways.

In this alternative tour, which starts and ends at Willen Lake, learn how to read the redways, experience the ups and downs of winding around roads and take part in a parade.

September 16

The highly anticipated Blazing Saddles is an outdoor performance celebrating women, cycling and fashion, looking at how in the 1890s, when bicycles first became widely available, this marked a step forward for women. Details here

September 21-24

– Following the success of last year, the MK Lit Fest is back. Meet famous authors, with the likes of Mark Haddon, Lemn Sissay, Stella Duffy, Hollie McNish and Sarfraz Manzoor, new authors, and take part in writing workshops.

There will also be free tickets to selected events for 16 – 25 year olds thanks to an MK Community Foundation grant. Read up about that here
