REVIEW: Mike and Dave Need Wedding Cake i'isn't funny or crude enough'

Director: Jake Szymanski. 98mins. (15)

Synopsis

Two hard-partying brothers (Zac Efron, Adam Devine) place an online ad to find the perfect dates for their sister's Hawaiian wedding. Hoping for a wild getaway, the boys instead find themselves out-hustled by an uncontrollable duo (Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza).

Review by Jason Day

The latest frat boy/party comedy starring Efron's, whose career path will need a rethink as the big 3 0 approaches.  He might want to concentrate on broadening his range rather than his impressive physique, or getting on a bit will hit him hard.

Mike and Dave...is not a bad film but the main gripe I have is that it isn't funny or crude enough.

I'm a broad-minded man but Mike and Dave...promises to be up there with the likes of Knocked Up and Bridesmaids, but cannot possibly aspire to either film's tone as at heart it is a sweet little flick about two boys growing up.

Most of the laughs are provided by Devine as he becomes increasingly exasperated. He is much more at ease than the too composed and self-aware Efron
Plaza is a more convincing party girl than Kendrick (who appears ill at ease and hesitant), merrily screaming sexual obscenities throughout the film.
