Ever since the 90’s I have not wanted anything more than to be part of the Star Wars universe; whether a Jedi, Sith or Stormtrooper, there was nothing more for a child to want for, so when I first played ‘Battlefront’ on PS2, I was elated.

We finally have a next-gen iteration of the franchise to feed our childhood nostalgia, but over all the positivity surrounding the game the ugly head of negativity can be seen; but what are peoples’ complaints? Let’s start with the basics.

Star Wars: Battlefront’ is a First and Third Person Shooter, Massive Online Multiplayer Game, in which you are randomly allocated a position on either the ‘Rebels’ or the ‘Imperials’ and then have to compete in various modes to become the victorious team.

Some of the modes have up to 40 people on one map at the same time, creating some epic-sized battles.

The game play modes including ‘Blast’ (Team Deathmatch), ‘Drop Zone’ (Capture the Flag), and ‘Cargo’ (Collect the Cargo, return the Cargo).

These modes are great fun, and have been adapted from well known Online Shooters such as Battlefield and Call of Duty.

There are some other great ‘Battlefield’ specific modes, my two favourite of which are ‘Fighter Squadron’, in which 20 players fly TIE Fighters, X-Wings and many more spacecraft to take each other down in a Dogfight; complete with the ‘Internal Cockpit’ views made famous in the films.

The other great mode is ‘Walker Assault’ in which, playing as the Rebels, you have to keep transmission stations on to gain coordinates for your Y-Wings to bomb-run two AT-ATs which are trying to destroy the Rebel Transport Ships.

The aim of the Imperials is to get these Transmissions switched off and eventually get to the Rebel bases to destroy the ships.

Although fantastic fun to play, some of the modes do still have glitches that need to be fixed, and in this you can see peoples’ frustration; some modes make it extremely difficult for certain teams to win, certain maps are not laid out well enough and leave certain teams to an advantage, spawn points are sometimes absolutely absurd with you spawning at edges of the map, right next to enemies and so on.

One other disappointing factor of this game, which I do agree with, is the complete lack of substantial story mode.

There IS a certain kind of Single-Player mode, but it really is just a fleshed out Tutorial mode set on various maps, and has you complete challenges for some figurines for a diorama. That is about it, really.

Aside from these, overall, minor problems, the game is still RIDICULOUSLY fun to play, and really outshines the irritating gameplay of Call of Duty, and really winds you back to ‘Playing games for fun’.
