Danesborough Chorus announce Remembrance Weekend concert

Danesborough Chorus begins its 48th season with a concert befitting for Remembrance Weekend.

Musical Director, Ian Smith, will conduct the choir in performances of Cherubini’s Requiem, Fauré’s Requiem and his Cantique de Jean Racine. The concert, on Saturday, November 12, will be accompanied by Paul Carr (organ) with soloists Eve McGrath (soprano), and Nicolas Moodie (baritone).

This is a rare opportunity to hear Cherubini’s Requiem in C minor. The work was commissioned by Louis XVIII for a memorial service in 1817 on the 24th anniversary of the execution of Louis XVI during the French Revolution.

Its success was immediate and although now a somewhat neglected work, it was much admired at the time by fellow composers such as Beethoven, Berlioz, Mendelssohn and Brahms.

Fauré began work on his Requiem in 1887 ‘for the pleasure of it’, though the death of his father two years earlier almost certainly provided the initial inspiration. Fauré’s Requiem is now hugely popular, regularly featuring near the top of Classic FM’s Hall of Fame which lists the UK’s 300 favourite pieces of classical music.

Danesborough Chorus will also perform Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine, written for a composition competition in 1865 and another of the composer’s most popular works.

Tickets are £20 (central pews), £15 (rear centre), £10 (side aisle seats), £5 for under-18s (all areas).
