SO YOU THINK YOU KNOW ELVIS? CHECK OUR 'KING' SIZED FACT FILE

With the Elvis inspired musical Love Me Tender heading to MK Theatre this coming week, Total MK has unearthed some Presley facts for you...

Did you know...?

Elvis has topped the British singles chart 21 times - including five times since his death in 1977.

The first time he took the top spot was in June 1957, with All Shook Up.

Most recently, it was in 2005 with It's Now or Never

Elvis' identical twin brother, Jesse Garon, was stillborn, leaving Elvis an only child

When Elvis was three years old, his father was imprisoned for altering a $4 cheque he had been given in payment for a hog.

He served nine months of a three-year sentence before being released.

But by then, the Presley family had lost their house

Even Elvis had to deal with the non-believers; At High School his eighth grade mark for music was a C and his teacher told him he had no aptitude for singing.

The next day he took his guitar to school and delivered a live version of Keep Those Icy Cold Fingers Off Me, to prove them wrong. His teacher listened and then said: "You're right.  I don't appreciate you style of music."

Elvis bought the 14 acres of Graceland for $102,500 while just 22 years old, and the Pontomac, a $55 yacht previously owned by President Roosevelt.

The boat was later given away to charity

Incredibly, given the levels of success he enjoyed, Elvis never performed outside North America.

He famously set foot on British soil in 1960 though, when travelling home from German in a military plane, which refuelled in Ayrshire, at Prestwick Airport.

The King was in the country for two hours, seen by just 200 people."This is quite a country.  I must see more of it," he said.

There are claims that Elvis enjoyed a secret week in London in 1958 with Tommy Steele...

He recorded what would become his first single, That's All Right, at Sun Studios in July 1954

Those looking for an Elvis-themed holiday can visit the real Heartbreak Hotel in Memphis, by Graceland itself.

The boutique hotel - visited by Total MK - has a framed photograph of Presley in every room.

Elvis' TV room at Graceland was fitted with three screens, lined up on the same wall - making it easy for him to keep tabs on small screen happenings simultaneously!

If it wasn't for the chart success of Love Me Tender, then Elvis' first movie would have been called The Reno Brothers.

It was the only one of his films that he didn't receive top billing for

Originally buried at Forest Lawn cemetery, Elvis was reburied at his Graceland home, in between the final resting places of his Grandmother and Father.

Annually, more than half a million people visit the property in Memphis

Love Me Tender begins a six-day stay at MK Theatre from Monday.
