Animal activists mark World Day For Laboratory Animals in Milton Keynes

Motorists passing Walton Manor yesterday will have been struck by the floral arrangements on the road verges.

The tributes were left by Milton Keynes animal rights activists, marking World Day For Laboratory Animals.

A spokesman told Total MK: "World Day For Laboratory Animals is an opportunity to remember all the animals that suffer through experiments.

"An undercover investigation at MSD Animal Health in 2013 showed how they experiment on animals for veterinary medicine. The investigation showed how they were breeding cats and dogs in order to carry out cruel tests on them. The flower laying outside MSD yesterday was a way to remember the animals that have suffered and also raise awareness of the cruelty that is taking place behind closed doors."

In a statement to Total MK, MSD Animal Health said: "MSD Animal Health no longer has research facilities in Milton Keynes.

"Laboratory animal research is indispensable to the discovery, development, manufacture and marketing of innovative medicines that protect the health of pets and animals, and help control the spread of disease."

They added: "MSD Animal Health makes decisions regarding animal use and welfare by balancing scientific and regulatory requirements with strong consideration of ethical, welfare and societal values.

"We are dedicated to the ethical and responsible treatment of all animals involved in the development of medicines and vaccines, and further, we place significant emphasis on the development, validation and acceptance of alternative approaches to animal testing."
