GIVING SOMETHING BACK: LESLEY'S ISLAND OF RAINBOWS...

In the third of her diary extracts for us, MK-based Lesley Kahney explains more about life volunteering on the Island of Eilean Ban, off the coast of mainland Scotland ...

I think Eilean Ban should be called the 'Island of Rainbows'!

The frequent heavy rain at the moment gives way to lots of beautiful rainbows and we seem to have our own repeated ones just over Eilean Ban.

There really is a pot of gold to be found in the beauty of the wildlife and landscape.

The rain hasn't inhibited visitors and the most amazing people come along. Some visitors are members of the Born Free Foundation.

The Foundation was started by Virginia McKenna, star of the film 'Born Free' and 'Ring of Bright Water'.

When an elephant that Virginia worked with in a film later died prematurely in London Zoo, she set about creating a charity to rescue animals from appalling lives of misery.

The Born Free Foundation grew from a small beginning into a global worldwide force for wildlife.

Virginia McKenna played a large role in helping to create the project that restored the island, Eilean Ban, and the cottages to how they were when Gavin Maxwell lived here.

It is lovely to connect for a couple of hours with people who share an interest and passion for the man, Gavin Maxwell, and his works.
