Residents outraged in Milton Keynes as trees are placed in 'concrete coffins'

Residents on a city estate have been outraged after young healthy trees have been encased in concrete.

The land is owned by Milton Keynes Council and the work was carried out this week next to the Tesco store in Tinkers Bridge.

It has turned once pretty flower beds into ugly concrete spaces, and condemned the trees.

One resident who contacted Total MK said: “I cannot believe the stupidity of concreting in trees that need water to survive. The beds used to have flowers in but are now completely concreted over. It looks awful.

"Lamp posts that need to be accessed for maintenance or replacement have been given the same treatment.

“It makes no sense environmentally when we are being encouraged to protect wildlife, help the trees, help the bees and the like, to then have someone come along and encase trees in what are essentially concrete coffins, destroying what were healthy flowerbeds.

“I cannot comprehend how anyone would have thought this is a good idea," they added.

Another member of the public took to social media to share their thoughts: “Words fail me, waste of resources. Why not fix the roads instead of this needless act?'

Milton Keynes Council and Tesco have been contacted for comment.
