Tesco to remove 'concrete coffins' from Milton Keynes trees after Total MK story

Tesco is set to remove concrete that has been applied to four flower beds on an estate in Milton Keynes after Total MK intervened.

The work, on land owned by Milton Keynes Council, was carried out this week next to the Tesco Express Store in Tinkers Bridge, and if left would have led to the demise of four healthy trees.

One resident who contacted Total MK said the flowerbeds had been turned into 'concrete coffins'. They added: “I cannot believe the stupidity of concreting in trees that need water to survive. The beds used to have flowers in but are now completely concreted over. It looks awful."

But when Total MK contacted Tesco, the company apologised for using concrete to cover the areas which they acknowledged was wrong.

In a statement to us, a spokesman said: "We're very sorry that four planters have been incorrectly covered outside our Tinkers Bridge Express store. We have instructed our contractors to remove the concrete."

Tesco said it has an agreement with the Council to cover two of the four areas with resin 'which will improve their condition for the community,' adding that the concrete will be removed from all plant areas before the two outside the store are covered in the resin.
