The Bluesmobile on a mission to raise smiles in Milton Keynes

Everybody needs somebody during these difficult times – and in Milton Keynes Ant Owen has been doing his bit to pop a smile on people's faces.

Ant is a huge fan of the Blues Brothers and has his very own Bluesmobile motor vehicle. During the pandemic, he has been cruising our streets blasting out top tunes and bringing joy to everyone lucky enough to see him, writes Sammy Jones.

He has made the news far and wide for his travelling music machine, but where did the idea come from?
“It started when I saw a video on Facebook in Italy; they were driving round telling everyone to stay in. I thought 'wouldn't it be good if I drove around playing music instead. I thought it would bring a smile or two. Hopefully I won't get done by the police,” he says with a wink.

He is joking though, and says that the boys in blue have been on side.

“The Mayor of Milton Keynes and the police approve, which is very special,” he told Total MK.

People often tap their feet or have a little boogie when he shows up, but one pair of cleaning operatives took it one stage further.

“They were on a dustcart and started dancing together rock 'n' roll style when I put on Reet Petite. It was brilliant. Even today I had two ladies dancing in the street. It really is magic.”

Ant is also part of a Blues Brothers tribute show – which isn't that surprising; the Bluesmobile should have given you a clue!

His pal Col Elsam plays Jake, and Ant plays Elwood: “He is the car geek driver of the Bluesmobile, and a harmonica player. I've been playing the harmonica since I was 14 – after I watched the movie my dad bought my first one.

“There was no doubt that I would be playing Elwood in a show one day. You can make it if you really, really try.”

If you do see Ant out and about, cruising our roads and spilling tunes, he won't be alone – he has a pint-sized blues aide by his side.

“My son comes with me,” Ant says, “He's like my rock as it can get emotional visiting people – especially if they have been affected by COVID-19.”

Right about now, the duo will doubtless be adjusting their hats, pulling their shades and heading out to spread more cheer. Show them some love.
