In Review: ENB's Manon is 'a beautiful and moving ballet that is not to be missed'

It is only the second time in thirty years that this classic modern ballet has been performed outside London, so it's a real treat to be able to see this period drama love story which has become famous for its dramatic plot and expressive choreography.

This production encompasses all the passion and drama of the ballet with some outstanding performances, notably from the principal performers, award winning Russian ballerina Jurgita Dronina in the title role and Isaac Hernandez as her love interest Des Grieux, writes Chris Gregg.

The role of Manon is coveted by ballet performers as one of the most fulfilling, giving an opportunity to play a wide range of emotions and some really demanding scenes. Jurgita gives this performance everything and conveys the character's emotional journey through the show with real depth and authenticity.

This 'tragic romance' tells the tale of the young and naïve Manon who falls in love with the penniless student Des Grieux. But when her scheming brother Lescaut (Ken Saruhashi) tries to tempt her away with diamonds and fur coats as the mistress of the wealthy Monsieur GM (Fabian Reimair), she is torn between innocent love and a life of decadence.

She doesn't put up much of a fight before being swept away by her wealthy suitor. But will wanting it all turn out to be her downfall?

As we've come to expect from the English National Ballet's productions, this is another visual feast with breathtakingly beautiful and expressive dancing which makes the story easy to follow. The show takes you from the sleazy brothels of 18th century Paris filled with aristocrats, beggars, courtesans and harlots to a desolate Louisiana swamp. All accompanied by a live orchestra performing the music from French composer Jules Massenet.

This is a challenging and dramatic story which has been told with passion by a talented cast and producers who have clearly put their all into doing justice to it.

It is a beautiful and moving ballet which is rarely performed regionally so it really should not be missed.

English National Ballet's production of Kenneth MacMillan’s Manon is at Milton Keynes Theatre until Saturday 27th October 2018.
