In Review: Finding the funnies at Milton Keynes Theatre with Peter Pan Goes Wrong

Peter Pan Goes Wrong is the latest show from Mischief Theatre to reach Milton Keynes Theatre, writes Chris Gregg.

Mischief Theatre are currently on primetime BBC1 with The Goes Wrong Show and after the success of recent visits by The Play That Goes Wrong and the Comedy About A Bank Robbery to Milton Keynes, which were both very funny, the bar was set high for this show.

Peter Pan is the new production from Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society as the cast take to the stage full of optimism.

But it doesn't take long before things start to go wrong with fluffed lines, technical hitches and missed cues before the show begins to unravel before your eyes... And when there's flying, revolving sets and quick costume changes involved, there's plenty of potential for mayhem.

As a series of mishaps leave actors injured and backstage revelations cause cast members to come to blows, you're left wondering if they will even make it through to the end of the show.

Mischief Theatre have reinvented slapstick and physical comedy with their brilliant shows, and this is no exception.

Once again, the precise timing and meticulously planned chaos is perfectly executed and although a lot of the ideas are similar to what you might have seen them do in other shows or on TV, it's still achingly funny.

There aren't many shows that leave large sections of the audience unable to stop laughing but this is genuinely hilarious.

The whole cast are fantastic, but special mention must go to Oliver Senton as Robert whose performance as Peter Pan's Shadow is wonderful.

Katy Daghorn as an overacting Sandra playing Wendy Darling is perfect, and Tom Babbage as Max steals the show when he comes on as the crocodile. George Haynes as the stressed out Director Chris Bean is also excellent. Completing the cast are Romayne Andrews, Georgia Bradley, Phoebe Ellabani, James Marlowe, Ethan Moorhouse and Patrick Warner.

This is a very clever and very funny show which doesn't disappoint and if it doesn't make you believe in fairies it will definitely restore your faith in anarchy - but it's definitely not a pantomime.
