In Review: Priscilla Queen of the Desert at Milton Keynes Theatre

Milton Keynes Theatre are celebrating their twentieth birthday this week with the return of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

It's hard to imagine a show with more glitter, glamour and sequins than this smash hit based on the 1994 movie, writes Chris Gregg.

It's everything you expect, amplified to a level you'd struggle to imagine. Hilarious, heartwarming and uplifting at the same time as being a really fun night out with some amazing disco music performed by a live band and a trio of divas.

Priscilla is the hilarious story of a trio of drag queens who go on a road trip to the Australian Outback in a temperamental tour bus to put on the show of a lifetime and along the way they encounter some less open minded country folk and discover an unconventional way to play table tennis.

Strictly winner Joe McFadden stars as Tick/Mitzi alongside Miles Western, who plays Bernadette, and Nick Hayes as Adam/Felicia. The sassy trio give some dazzling performances with a bewildering number of costume changes.

Somehow despite the fake eye lashes, wigs and flambouyant costumes, the characters are anything but fake. There is a genuineness to the chemistry between them and the story explores some important issues around acceptance, diversity and self awareness.

This is a show which you can't help but enjoy, with a non-stop playlist of floorfillers from It's Raining Men to I WIll Survive and a brilliant literal performance of McArthur Park!

In the Producer's chair this time is Jason Donovan, who played the lead role last time the show came to MK. He says, "Priscilla is such a wonderful Australian story about diversity. It is a modern musical with a great heart.”

A visit to see this show should be on every school syllabus - with every performance a few more minds are opened and that must be positive.
