ON STAGE: Rocky Horror star Ben Adams talks all things theatre with Total MK

He has been here in panto in the new city before now, and last year starred in Flashdance with former Strictly professional, Joanne Clifton.

Next up?  Super-talented Ben Adams is again partnering with Joanne as the pair star in The Rocky Horror Show, which arrives at Milton Keynes Theatre on Monday (February 4).

Ben's career started as head chorister at St. Margarets, Westminster Abbey.  He sang at royal weddings, toured all over Europe, recorded two classical albums and frequently performed for the likes of the Queen and the Pope.

At 16, he became the lead singer of the band A1 who racked up an incredible 10 million record sales, two UK number ones, five studio albums and toured throughout the world, winning a Brit Award among many others.

When the band split, Ben took to the studio and is now a successful song writer and producer, working with the likes of Robin Thicke, Craig David, JLS, Ward Thomas, Sam Bailey, Boyzone and Alexandra Burke to name but a few.

Tell us about your first memory of the theatre
I went to see Les Mis with my parents. Absolutely loved the live magic created on front of my eyes.

And the moment when you realised the theatre was your calling
I’ve pretty much seen every musical out there and love it so much that I’ve written my own that’s at Andrew loyd Webber’s theatre at the other palace in london from September. It’s called Eugenius! Go see it-it’s amazing!

Any dreadful calamities, or funny happenings on stage that you would care to share with us?
I’ve fallen off a few!

Which stage actor, living or dead, would you most like to meet, and what question would you ask them?
Most of my favourite actors are now my friends so I ask them questions all the time.

Do you have any superstitions, or pre-performance routines?
I have olbas oil on the side of stage. Find it calms me for some reason

The best piece of advice given to you when you started in the business
Enjoy the moment. Don’t keep thinking of what’s next otherwise you’ll miss what’s going on right now.

What do you think has been your steepest learning curve
Watching myself back on tv and learning what not to do the next time.

How do you fill your spare time while on tour
I bring my studio with me and write and produce for other music artists.

Nerves or excitement? Which takes over just before the curtain rises?
I keep pretty calm so neither

How can the future of theatre be safeguarded? What would you do to entice new blood to audiences?
I’m not really into plays, more musicals. I’m often disappointed by the score of musicals if I’m honest. It’s a MUSICAL after all so that should be the most important thing. So keep the music great and audiences will keep coming back.

Finally, why should people come and see The Rocky Horror Show?

They can come into the theatre and enjoy two, two and a half hours of just forgetting about everything else and having the best time. That’s what Rocky Horror did for me.
There really isn’t a weak link, everyone is amazing.
